Mark Gardner, SWODA fire manager, and legislators presented area fire departments with operational grants during presentations held during September in Elk City and Hobart. Annually, the Oklahoma Forestry Service distributes funding to rural fire departments serving communities with populations less than 10,000 that depend either fully or partially on volunteer firefighters. Governor Mary Fallin authorizes these grants and the Oklahoma Legislature funds them. Grant funds purchase items such as firefighting equipment, insurance premiums, equipment maintenance and personal protective gear.
Fire departments receiving grants in SWODA’s eight-county region include: Berlin, Blair, Butler, Canute, Carter, Clinton, Corn, Cloud Chief, Dill City, Foss, Headrick, Hammon, Hobart, Mangum, Mountain Park, Reydon, Rocky, Russell, Saddle Mountain, Sedan, Sayre, Sentinel, Strong City, Snyder, Sweetwater, Thomas and Willow.
